Jaya Bachchan refuses SP ticket for Rajya Sabha
Lucknow : Bollywood star Jaya Bachchan has refused
the Samajwadi Party ticket for the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh in the
June 17 biennial election.
Ms Bachchan was given the ticket by the SP on May 26 terming her a loyal
party leader who had contributed much for the building up the party.
SP president Mulayam Singh Yadav today hinted that Ms Bachchan has
refused the ticket and the party might now field national spokesman
Mohan Singh in her place.
He, however, refused to elaborate saying that details would be made
available by this evening.
Ms Bachchan, who kept silent after the expulsion of Mr Amar Singh from
the party, was a surprise renomination by the SP chief for the RS
elections as senior leaders like Bhagwati Singh, Kamal Akhtar and Brij
Bhushan Tiwari and three others, who are sitting members, had been
ignored.
Rashid Masood, national vice-president of the party, was the other party
candidate for Rajya Sabha.
The candidature of Ms Bachchan came as a surprise in view of her
proximity with Mr Amar Singh, who is no more with the SP.
This would have been Ms Bachchan's third term in the Rajya Sabha from
Uttar Pradesh. She was first elected in 2004, but had to resign in 2006,
following the office of profit controversy as she was heading the UP
Film Development Corporation at that time.
Later, she was re-elected in the by-election after giving up the post.
At present, Ms Bachchan is in Instanbul.
